About
I have this weird paranoid fear that one day I will see no fishermen on the Galata Bridge and Karaköy and Eminönü embankments as some fancy hotels and restaurants are slowly taking over these spots, building these polished decking terraces and green areas, all looking like renders from Sims.
But for now hundreds of fishermen, fisherwomen, fisherchildren cover the bridge and the embankments like bees, and hundreds of cats wait beside them, patient, for their share of the freshly caught Bosphorus fish.
Seagulls, street musicians, ferry announcements, beckoning cries of vendors grilling mackerel on coals. The sonic and visual environment of Karaköy has its own frequency, its own rhythm. Life unfolds here in an elementary way, and fishing feels like a life-sustaining, existential activity. The fishing rods and lines are like little threads connecting this world to the sea, to the mythic Bosphorus.
